Interview: Kemis Irenee Photography

We are thrilled to bring you another photographer interview today... with the very talented Kemis Irenee Photography.

Where is home? Tell us about your family.

Home for now is Fort Belvoir Va. But where ever my family is I can call home. I am a mom to two boys Izzy and Christian. They are a handful, and I recently had a little girl named Madison. My husband is Ben, we met on Craigslist, before that was frowned upon. He's the love of my life and we just celebrated our sixth year anniversary. Oh and I have a cat named Boo Boo Kitty and a dog named Cookie. I can usually be found in my pjs when not working, I'm a complete homebody.

What keeps you motivated?

I am motivated by the desire to have something that is all mine. It's not my husbands, not my kids and I don't have to share this with anyone, its mine. Does that sound a bit selfish? This gives a bit of sanity and creative release. I am also motivated by the fact that I have a very good memory. I want to be able to look back on pictures and relive moments with my family.

What Photographers inspire you?

I am not inspired by any big name photographers. My "photografriends" is where I find much of my inspiration. Alex Sumner with Alex Sumner Photography is probably on the top of my list. She's my best friend, and I admire her work. She captures the innocence of children, and inspires me to do the same. I also enjoy Candice Z form the Blissful Maven, because she makes art, and doesn't look for approval from anyone.

What are your tips or tricks in getting great images of children?

Children are my favorite little clients, I just let them be. That's when you get the best, when you just let  children be children. I come down to their level, and I take my time. I shoot for quality and not for time. If all else fails, you will catch me singing, dancings. I also keep dum dum and M&Ms in my pocket...just in case.

What do you consider one of your biggest accomplishments as a photographer?

Seeing people cry when they get their images back. It shows that I accomplished giving them back a moment in time that they will never forget.

What is the one quality you look for in a friend?

Just one? I listed 5 and then reread the question. I guess besides the obvious qualities people look for I'd say that have to be weird. I love people that are different and don't typically fit in. Those are my favorite friends.

If you could tell your 16 year old self something what would it be?

I would tell her to just have fun and that everything is going to turn out beautifully. That she has the perfect husband waiting for her, and the most beautiful kids. That it is ok to keeping putting yourself out there and always, always be unapologetically you!!

What was your first paid session?

November of 2013. I was paid $25 for Christmas pictures. They aren't bad, nope they were terrible. I cut off limbs and the editing was atrocious. They look green. I wish I could go back and redo that for them.
