Featured Artist: Stephanie Stafford

Tell us about yourself and your business.
I'm Stephanie! Owner/Photographer at Southern Willow Photography. I'm a mother, wife, Daughter, Sister and Pet Lover! I fell in love with photography at a very young age. My dad was always taking pictures or shooting videos of my brother and I, no matter what we were getting into! I got my first camera when I was 16 and from then on I without a doubt loved photography. I would pose my dogs, cats, and I would take photos of tree's, insects and more. It wasn't until 2012 until I started my business, 6 months after having my first child. My kids and husband are the reason I am where I am today and for that I am thankful!

Where are you located?
As of right now I am located in Kingstree, SC but we will be moving to Johnsonville, SC at the end of June.

Who or what inspires your art?
My children inspire me the most. They are crazy(in a good way), fun loving, free spirited kids. My daughter has a secret love for modeling for me, although she won't admit it if you asked her and my son keeps you on your toes and gives me some fun action shots! They are the light that shines on my darkest days and I know as long as I have them I will continue to be inspired.

What do you love most about photography?
I love how free & in control I feel when I'm shooting. In that moment I am who I'm suppose to be!!

Describe your style in 2 words.
Whimsical & Vintage

Tell us about your specialization or what subjects you prefer to shoot.
Children! I have a strong passion for child photography. I produce my best work when working with children. People ask all the time how I am so patient with kids and how I do this and I just reply "because I'm a kid at heart myself" and children are so fun!! Plus, they don't care about how they look in pictures!! LOL

What do you do to jolt your creativity when it’s running low?
I usually like to sit outside and just watch my kids run around and play & then sometimes Ill be scrolling through Facebook and see an outfit and ideas just start running through my head!

What’s in your camera bag?
I shoot with a Canon 70D, my primary lense is a 55-250mm, I also have a 50mm.
Extra SD cards, batteries, and cleaning supplies for my camera.

What are your Top 3 must haves when shooting.
Camera (of course)
Amazing location
A positive & creative attitude!

Share a fun fact about yourself with the readers.
I watch marathons on netflix every night while I edit. (sometimes theres ice cream involved)

If you could photograph anyone in the world, who would he/she be?
I'd really like to travel overseas and photograph people in different countries!

Natural light or artificial?
Natural

What impact does photography have on your family life?
90% of the time its a positive impact. I do struggle sometimes with finding a babysitter for sessions but it usually works out!!

What’s your most important artistic tool besides your camera?
My mind!

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned since started photography?
Be yourself.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting their journey in the photography world?
Never ever give up!! Keep following your dreams, your passions, and keep pushing! After all, we all start somewhere!
