Name: Ashleigh Olson

Business Name: Olson Photography

Where are you located? Hopkinton, Massachusetts

Tell us about your photography journey and/or business? I fell in love with photography years ago, but started focusing on the business standpoint back in 2010. I come from a long line of photography lovers within my family, my mother and my grandfather, who was a police photographer in our hometown. Fun fact: I love collecting old vintage cameras!

Who/What inspires you? My son. He's 15 months old, and has such an amazing personality already. He inspires me to be the best I can be, in my business and life in general. I want him to grow up and be proud of who I am! I strive to set a good example for him, and teach him he can do anything if he sets his mind to it, and puts in the effort!

Describe your style and specialization in two words.
Real Life. If I could elaborate, I love capturing candid moments... real smiles, real laughs, real memories.
What's in your camera bag? What's your Top 3 must-haves?
A Nikon D700, 50mm 1.8 lens. I'm a simple girl, I love my prime lens. I hope to invest in a 35mm soon!

Do you have any other artistic outlets/hobbies?
I am a big fan of DIY. I make so much stuff, scarves (arm knitting!) to homemade gifts. I made all of my Christmas presents this past year!

If you could photograph anyone in the world, who would it be?
This may sound crazy, but the Royal Family. I love Kate Middleton. She is so classy, and I'm sure she would be fun to hang out with. How fun would it be to photograph the Royal baby!?

Natural Light or Artificial?
Natural Light! I love natural light for newborn lifestyle sessions, it's just beautiful when the light touches their soft skin! :)

How does photography influence your family and social life?
I'm starting to notice if I let my work get the best of me, it will take me away from my family time. It's best to budget your time spent doing your work, and make time for family! Now I've been trying to mesh the two together, and getting in the picture more with my son, so he has pictures of his mom. Sometimes being behind the camera all the time, we tend to forget to make an effort to get in the photo as well!

What's your most important artistic tool besides your camera?
I'm not sure if this counts, but I would have to say my personality. I love my clients, and I love to connect with them during sessions and make them feel comfortable. It's important for me to be personable, and to make sure we end the session both smiling.

What advice would you give to a newbie artist?
There's a bunch I could say, but a few things would be to learn your camera, and shoot in Manual! Also, don't get discouraged... everyone's journey is different, don't compare yours to someone else. We all start somewhere!
